If you’ve rented with a dog or cat, the end of tenancy clean needs extra attention. Pet hair gets everywhere, odours linger, and landlords are understandably alert to both at check-out.
Where pet hair hides
- Carpet edges and under radiators
- Skirting boards and door frames
- Air vents and extractor fan covers
- Inside wardrobes and cupboards
- Soft furnishings and curtains (in furnished lets)
- Behind and under appliances
Dealing with odours
Odours usually come from carpets and soft furnishings. A thorough vacuum helps, but carpet cleaning (£30 per room with Nestro) is often the only way to properly lift pet odours from fibres. Open windows during and after the clean to air the property.
Scratches and marks
Scuff marks on doors and skirting boards can often be cleaned off. Deeper scratches are damage rather than cleaning, and may be treated differently by your landlord.
Check your tenancy agreement
Some tenancy agreements that allowed pets include specific requirements at the end of the tenancy. Read yours so you know what’s expected.
Plan the order
- Move pets out first (or keep them with a friend on cleaning day)
- Remove bedding, bowls and toys
- Clean, then vacuum carpets thoroughly
- Add carpet cleaning if there are odours or marks
